WCEF2024, the Big Matchmaking 
Enterprise Europe Network, Flanders, Wallonie Entreprendre and Hub. Brussels are organising an official WCEF2024 side-event: a global online matchmaking session focusing on circular innovation. The online matchmaking session will run from 8 to 14 April, setting the stage for the main World Circular Economy Forum. Participants from all backgrounds, including business leaders, advisors, experts, innovators, policymakers, investors, researchers, startups and industry enthusiasts, are all welcome. Then there's the on-site session on 17 April. This will be hosted by the Belgian presidency of the EU Council under the heading BE Circular Economy Forum. International Conference on Water and Sewage in the Circular Economy Model 

The International Conference on Water and Sewage in the Circular Economy Model (CEwater) will take place on 22-24 April in Cracow (Poland). The Conference will take stock of the project on developing comprehensive water recovery solutions and raising awareness of the key role of water in the transformation process towards a circular economy, funded by the European Economic Area (EEA). This project aims to bolster the shift to the circular economy in the field of circular management of water resources.

Phosphorus Raw Materials in Visegrad Countries 

Organised in Cracow (Poland) on 24 April in a hybrid format, the International Conference - Phosphorus Raw Materials in Visegrad Countries  will take stock of the PhosV4 project. The project aims to increase knowledge about and awareness of the importance of phosphorus raw materials for food production in the V4, to build a V4 phosphorus management strategy so as to secure enough of this element for food production, to explore phosphorus-rich waste in the V4 countries and to analyse the options for phosphorus recovery from waste.

Plug into sustainability: e-waste recycling 

Organised by EuRIC, the conference on "Plug into sustainability: e-waste recycling" will take place on 3 June in Brussels. It will be an opportunity to explore the latest developments and sustainable practices in e-waste recycling, bringing together industry leaders, policy makers and innovators.

The Circularity Gap Report 2024 

According to the Circularity Gap Report 2024, the circular economy is becoming more popular but failing to deliver. This year's report lays out also a roadmap for ambitious change to unlock capital, roll out bold policies and close the skills gap. Circle Economy Foundation's Circularity Gap Reports have been providing analysis and theory on the global state of circularity since 2019. 

SMART CIRCUIT: Circular economy success stories 

The project showcases success stories from across Europe, emphasising the practical application of circular economy principles in various industries. They demonstrate innovative solutions to challenges in recycling, resource efficiency and sustainable manufacturing processes. This brochure sets out 122 success stories from nine countries (AT, CZ, DE, HU, HR, IT, PL, SK, SI).

Materials sorting or carbon capture? A cost-effectiveness comparison for reducing GHG emissions from incineration 

The study compares cost-effectiveness between sorting of mixed waste leftover after separate collection (leftover mixed waste sorting) and the capture of CO2 from incinerator flue gas for underground storage (carbon capture and storage, CCS). The study has found that the most cost-effective way of delivering system-wide reductions in CO2 emissions is the sorting system. The least cost-effective means to reduce CO₂ is CCS. Combining the two would achieve the greatest overall reduction and reduce the average cost of reduction to around half the cost of achieving reduction through CCS alone.

Digital Product Passport as Enabler for the Circular Economy 

The report analyses the Digital Product Passport (DPP) as a core instrument for building a circular economy, itself a key enabler of climate neutrality. It answers key questions about the DPP and stresses that although there is not yet a standardised, cross-sectoral and cross-company product passport system, there are already individual solutions for collecting information for certain product groups.

RECIMAP project: recycling blended cotton and polyester fabric waste 

RECIMAP is working on the selective separation of cotton and polyester blends through the synthesis and use of ionic liquids - a more environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional solvents. The polyester fraction is recycled using mechanochemical techniques to obtain recycled polyester, while the cotton fraction is used in the production of lactic acid via a lactic acid fermentation process.

The EDUCIRC project: the circular economy as a development model for the Republic of Serbia 

The EDUCIRC project will provide policy recommendations on rural development, with particular emphasis on women and young people. It will devise a new methodology for assessing the capacity of rural areas to deliver this transition. The project has already produced five work packages that contain plenty of research relevant to the development of the circular economy in Serbia. By focusing on gathering data, knowledge and information, the project will contribute to the future Strategy for the Circular Transition in the Republic of Serbia.

Level(s) and the EU Taxonomy: How to navigate changes to sustainable finance rules for buildings 

On 18 March, the European Commission is hosting a webinar showing how the  EU Level(s) framework for sustainable buildings can help industry professionals navigate changes in the rules governing sustainable finance as regards construction and real estate. The session explores changes related to the EU Taxonomy, a classification system setting the conditions that key construction and real estate activities will have to abide by in order to qualify as environmentally sustainable.
