As we head into summer, the European Union is abuzz with anticipation about the appointment of the new European Commission President and the College of Commissioners. This pivotal moment will shape the EU's policies and priorities for the coming years, not least for the circular economy. Stay tuned as we monitor these developments and their implications for the circular economy agenda.

CINEA has launched a special call for proposals as part of the LIFE Calls for Proposals 2024, offering new opportunities for activities aligned with our Platform. The aim is to strengthen the ECESP Coordination Group in advancing the transition to a circular economy, including Circular Business Models. This is a prime opportunity to enhance ECESP activities and their implementation, moving the circular transition closer to reality. More information is available here, and we invite you to join the info session organised by the European Commission on 8 July, 10:00-12:00, to ask any questions you may have before applying. 


We also have updates on future events, including webinars, workshops and conferences, where you can learn, network and collaborate with like-minded individuals. These events are designed to provide you with the tools and knowledge needed to drive change in your sphere of influence.

WCEF2024 Summary Report

WCEF2024, in partnership with ECESP, brought together circular economy professionals from 168 countries to collaborate and turn ideas into action. The Summary Report presents the conference’s findings, tools, calls to action, discussion highlights and statistics.

Götafors School: a successful example of modular construction

Götafors School in Sweden has been awarded the BREEAM In-Use Outstanding certification, proving that modular construction can be used to make a modern, energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly school.

Circular Cities webinars? Catch up with this treasure trove from the Circular Cities Declaration

The Declaration is designed to help accelerate the transition from a linear to a circular economy in Europe, and thereby create a resource-efficient, low-carbon and socially responsible society. ICLEI Europe has produced a series of eight webinars on inspiring examples of circular economy practices, models and strategies in signatory Circular Cities. 

Irish Government signs framework agreement for the purchase of remanufactured laptops

Green Public Procurement really can drive the circular transition! The Irish Government has just signed a framework agreement for the procurement of 60 000 remanufactured laptops. It's the first time that an EU Member State has implemented this type of GPP procedure. 

Kerava's New Era Building and Housing Festival: inspiration and circular solutions 

The New Era Buildings and Housing Festival (URF) is a Finnish event focusing on sustainable housing and living, taking place at Kerava Manor from 26 July to 7 August. There will be panel discussions and keynote speakers, workshops and a cultural programme for all age groups. 

6th European Recycling Conference: Recycling Today, Resourcing Tomorrow 

The Conference, organised by EuRIC in partnership with Assofermet, will take place on 26 September in Milan, under the heading 'Recycling Today, Resourcing Tomorrow'.

EFPIA, the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, has produced a report on circular opportunities in the healthcare industry. It explores areas such as eco-design, resource circulation and single-use plastic reduction. 

CEMBUREAU's Net Zero Roadmap: From Ambition to Deployment

The publication of CEMBUREAU's Net Zero Roadmap is a key moment for the EU cement sector: the roadmap looks at its climate ambition, the key levers to decarbonize cement production, and the policies needed to get there. 

Management of used and waste textiles in Europe’s circular economy

The EEA’s briefing provides an overview of the state of play of textile waste generation, collection systems, treatment capacity and the different classifications for used textiles in Europe. It also identifies factors which must be considered when implementing separate collection systems. 

ISO 59020: 2024 Circular economy — Measuring and assessing circularity performance 

ISO 59020 provides a structured approach for organisations to measure and assess their circularity performance. It aims to standardise the process by which organisations collect and calculate data, using mandatory and optional circularity indicators. 

Circular Economy: Leveraging a Sustainable Transformation 

The German Council for Sustainable Development has issued a number of recommendations to the German Federal Government regarding the transformation to a circular economy, such as setting out standards and norms and avoiding distortion of competition.

Report on the findings of the first 11 projects to use OFRA's Second Life Furniture mark

The Office Furniture Remanufacturing Association UK launched the Second Life Furniture mark in 2023. Organisations using the mark are required to submit their calculations and observations, providing a database of 11 projects to date, which has been analysed to identify patterns of adoption.

JC-Electronics: a global actor in refurbished industrial electronics

JC-Electronics supplies new, refurbished and repaired industrial electronics. They have developed a robust repair and refurbishment process over the past 17 years.

Sustainable Estimatics: enabling insurers to track the emissions produced by car insurance claims

Solera, a global leader in vehicle lifecycle management and claims which is active in Europe, has launched Sustainable Estimatics. This carbon tracking tool is intended to help the insurance industry manage new environmental, social and governance regulations and become greener and less wasteful.

e-SAFE: tackling the need to renovate the EU's housing stock 

The Horizon 2020 e-SAFE project is trying to change the way we approach building retrofitting, with an emphasis on circularity and waste reduction. It combines energy efficiency, seismic resistance, financial feasibility and various social benefits.

The EDUCIRC project: The circular economy as a development model for the Republic of Serbia

The EDUCIRC project will provide policy recommendations on rural development, with particular emphasis on women and young people. It will devise a new methodology for assessing the capacity of rural areas to deliver the transition to the circular economy

FOODY EU: using circular and sustainable food practices to unlock NEET youth's entrepreneurial skills 

FOODY EU is an Erasmus Plus Cooperation project aiming to improve the employment and entrepreneurial skills of young people by applying circular economy principles.

Corbion AlgaPrime™ DHA for feed and food: a sustainable and circular option in nutrients production 

Corbion grows microalgae in closed fermentation tanks where they transform sustainable sugars into algae in a few days. The algae production system is fully circular: the facility uses bagasse, a by-product from the nearby sugar mill, as a renewable source of energy which powers the sugar mill and algae facility.

Circular updates from the European Commission  

EU grants for projects to reduce consumer food waste

The EU is launching a call for proposals for projects to reduce consumer food waste. This call targets both single stakeholders and multi-stakeholder collaborations or partnerships across the food supply chain. All interested stakeholders can apply by 25 September.

New Environmental Footprint methods: webpage going live!

The Environmental Footprint methods are scientific tools and rules designed to calculate the environmental impact of products and organisations. Developed by the European Commission with the involvement of stakeholders, their main purpose is to provide reliable and verifiable information, enable businesses to improve their sustainability practices and help consumers make informed choices.

European Commission launches public consultation on the Social Climate Fund

The European Commission has published the guidance on the application of the 'do no significant harm' (DNSH) principle under the Social Climate Fund. The draft retains a high level of environmental ambition, balancing operational DNSH criteria against avoiding any undue administrative burden on beneficiaries. They are now asking for feedback on whether this balance has been achieved. The consultation closes on 13 August, and an info session will be held on 18 July.
