December 2024

Dear Circular Economy Community,

Welcome back! We’re coming to the end of what can only be called an interesting year. After tricky negotiations and the vote by the European Parliament, the new Commission is now in place, and the appointment of a Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy clearly indicates that the circular economy is high on the agenda – which can only be encouraging for 2025.

The ECESP will be organising an #EUCircularTalks event on Bridging local and European networks: How circular hubs can drive inclusive regional growth on 6 December, so do sign up for a discussion on the role of EU networks in advancing circular economy goals across Europe. As usual, the secretariat has been busy adding items to the website: here’s a selection!

A digital workflow for assessing lifespan, carbonation and embodied carbon of reusing concrete in buildings

This study presents an innovative digital workflow for predicting the lifespan of concrete elements, CO2 uptake via natural carbonation and embodied carbon savings through reuse. The workflow was tested in a building from the 1960s with high reuse potential and found that most precast elements would last long enough to be reused effectively and that reuse is better for the environment than carbonation.

Improving waste wood circularity in the EU: classification frameworks and policy options

This analysis report was prepared in connection with the EU-funded Wood2Wood project and explores opportunities to advance the circular economy and overcome challenges to waste wood utilisation through supportive policy.
